7 Non-Negotiables to Start My Morning Slow

In my opinion your mornings are the most important part of the day. Often they can feel rushed and chaotic, and this set the intention for the rest of the day. So I’ve found that starting my day slow transforms my energy, focus, and overal mood. So over time, I’ve developed seven non-negotiables that help me greet each day with intention and presence.

1. A glass of lemon water

The very first thing I do in the morning is drink a glass of lukewarm water with freshly squeezed lemonjuice. Because when we sleep we are fasting. So in the morning we need to break the fast and I do this by hydrating with lemon water. It wakes up my body gently, flushes toxins, and gives my digestion a little nudge. Lemon water is simple, yet it is an invitation to start the day with care.

2. Preparing cacao or tea

While I drink my lemon water, I start making a warm drink. Whether I’m preparing a cacao or a calming herbal tea, I slow down and savor the process: measuring the ingredients, feeling the warmth in my hands, inhaling the aroma. This simple act turns an ordinary moment into a mindful ritual and gives me a chance to set my intention for the day. It’s about presence, not just taste.

3. 10 minutes of breathwork

Next, I dedicate at least ten minutes to conscious breathing. I see this as my morning ceremony: I sit comfortably, close my eyes, and focus solely on my breath. Inhaling deeply, exhaling fully, noticing how my body responds. Breathwork helps me release tension, center my mind, and reconnect with my body before the outside world starts demanding my attention. Even on busy days, these ten minutes feel like a reset button. It clears the fog in my head of the to do list that's already present. It gives me more focus to afterwards actually do stuff on that list. It can make or break my day when I choose to breath/meditate or not.

4. 30 minutes of reading

I also devote half an hour to reading, it can be something that inspires me or challenges my thinking or just a fun novel. This daily habit nourishes my mind, sparks creativity, and opens me to new perspectives. Starting the day with reading an actual book instead of something on the computer or phone gives me so much more focus! I used to read so many books, but the clutter in my mind made this impossible. But by obligatory reading 30 minutes a day, my focus slowly came back and I don't have to re-read everything anymore.

5. Journaling my morning pages

Writing morning pages is one of my most transformative habits. I pour out my thoughts, feelings, worries, and dreams onto paper without judgment. Journaling clears mental clutter, surfaces hidden emotions, and creates a container for self-reflection. It’s not about perfection or neatness—it’s about honesty, vulnerability, and allowing my mind to be free. By the time I finish, I feel lighter and more focused for the day ahead. I just start writing and writing what comes up. And I keep on writing until I finish my 5 pages. So there is a clear goal to the writing. You can also for example put on a song and don't finish writing until the song is over.

6. No phone, computer, or TV

For the first hour of my day, during the making of the warm drink, the breathwork, reading and journaling I don't use a computer, tv or internet. No scrolling, emails, or notifications. Protecting this sacred time allows me to start the day from a place of calm and intention rather than urgency and distraction. It’s amazing how different the energy feels when my morning belongs entirely to me, and not to the world waiting on the other side of a screen.

7. Preparing a nourishing meal

Finally, I end my morning ritual by preparing a meal that truly nourishes my body. It’s not just about food—it’s about honoring myself through what I eat. By fueling my body with intention, I carry energy, clarity, and care into the rest of the day.

Conclusion:

These seven non-negotiables are the anchors of my morning. They slow me down, nourish my mind and body, and remind me to move through life with intention. Do I always find the time to do all of them? Definitely no, but even adopting just one or two of these rituals can completely transform how your day begins. And although I call them 'non-negotiables', I'm not to strict on myself, because sometimes life happens. And I want to be mindfull and not punish myself.

Which of these non-negotiables will you try tomorrow morning?
